kids spanish song

Todos los patitos is a children’s song in Spanish that tells the story of a family of ducks that goes swimming. As with all traditional songs, there are many variations. In some versions, the verb for to swim is nadar and in others it is bañar. Both are common equivalents for to swim.

In the traditional lyrics the mother duck gets angry and tries to spank one of the ducklings, but that has been changed in some newer versions. In all the versions though, the little duck is in trouble and starts to cry, something that lots of little children find very intriguing.

Often children learn just the first part of the song, stopping where the little duck cries. The second part of the song describes the happy little ducks in the water.

Singing songs in Spanish, children produce correct, natural language. Songs are wonderful for pronunciation, building vocabulary and absorbing the structure of Spanish. This song is also chanted as a counting out rhyme (choosing rhyme like eenie meenie) in some Latin American countries. Whether sung or chanted, children learn lots of Spanish from this song.

These are the lyrics for a common version with no mention of spanking. Listen to this Spanish song for children.

Todos los patitos / All the little ducks
se fueron a nadar / went to swim
y el más pequeñito / and the littlest
se quiso quedar. / wanted to stay.
Su mamá enfadada / His angry mother
le quiso regañar / tried to scold him
y el pobre patito / and the poor little duck
se puso a llorar. / started to cry.

Los patitos en el agua / The little ducks in the water
meneaban la colita / wiggled their tails
y uno al otro se decían / and said to each other
¡Ay, qué agua tan fresquita! / Oh, what cool water!

Los patitos en el agua / The little ducks in the water
meneaban la colita / wiggled their tails
y uno al otro se decían / and said to each other
¡Ay, qué agua tan fresquita!/ Oh, what cool water!

This is another version of the Spanish children’s song Todos los patitos with traditional lyrics and a slightly different tune. It is sung by Manuela of Yo canto y bailo esta canción.

Todos los patitos / All the little ducks
se fueron a bañar / went to swim
y el más pequeñito / and the littlest duck
no sabía nadar. / didn’t know how to swim.
Su mamá enojada / His angry mother
le quiso pegar / tried to spank him
y el pobre patito / and the poor little duck
se puso a llorar. / started to cry.
¡cua, cua, cua, cua, cua!
