Knowing the days of the week in Spanish allows children to understand and communicate important information. That is why the days of the week are some of the first vocabulary taught in beginning Spanish classes. You can teach your child the days of the week in Spanish and use that vocabulary to talk about family activities.

Here is some useful information about the days of the week in Spanish:

The days of the week are not capitalized in Spanish.

The first day of the week on Spanish-language calendars is Monday.

The article el or los before the day of the week translates “on”.

Voy al parque el domingo.  / I go to the park on Sunday.

Tienes una cita con el dentista el martes. / You have a dentist appointment on Tuesday.

The days of the week do not become plural.  Only the article becomes plural – los.

Los jueves voy a la casa de mis abuelos. / On Thursdays I go to my grandparent’s house.

These are the days of the week in Spanish:

lunes – Monday

martes – Tuesday

miércoles – Wednesday

jueves – Thursday

viernes – Friday

sabado – Saturday

domingo – Sunday

These words are also useful when talking about the days of the week:

hoy – today

mañana – tomorrow

ayer – yesterday

el día – day

la semana – week

Use the days of the week in Spanish with your child in phrases like these:

Hoy es lunes. / Today is Monday.

Mañana es martes. / Tomorrow is Tuesday.

Ayer fue domingo. / Yesterday was Sunday.

El martes, tienes clase de piano. / On Tuesday, you have piano lessons.

Hay un partido de fútbol el jueves. / There is a soccer game on Thursday.

Looking at the calendar with your child, talk about questions like these:

¿Cuántos días hay en una semana? / How many days are in a week?

¿Qué día de la semana es el Día de la Acción de Gracias? / What day of the week is Thanksgiving?

¿Qué día de la semana es tu cumpleaños? / What day of the week is your birthday?

¿Qué día es el 16 de septiembre? / What day is the 16th of September?
