This is a very short, fun Spanish-language video from Discovery Kids about keeping water clean. It’s perfect for El día de la tierra, Earth Day. The audio is at a natural rate for native Spanish speakers, so it is great exposure for Spanish language learners.

Spanish learners will not understand every word, but that is fine. They will understand what is happening from the pictures. It is important for kids to get comfortable with not understanding every word. They will soon realize that they can understand some words and often the main idea. It is also important for them to hear and absorb the sounds and rhythm of native-speaker Spanish.
There are lots of ways to use this video with your child. Before you watch it the first time, talk about how important water, el agua, is for all of us. Then, watch the video all the way through with your child, letting her listen and watch. It is very short, about one minute, and children will understand what is happening from the pictures. After you watch the video, do one or more of the activities below.

This is the transcript for the video. It is followed by a variety of activity suggestions. Choose based on the age and Spanish language level of your child. There is also a translation of the transcript following the activities.
– Hola amigo ¿quieres que exploremos el arroyo juntos?
– Sí, me gustaría, pero…
– Hey, ¿por qué te pones triste?
– Quisiera jugar contigo y con mis amigos también, pero alguien arrojó basura y se cerró el paso para llegar a ellos.
– Sí, no te preocupes. Ya sé como ayudarte.
– ¡Gracias Doki!
– ¿Por qué alguien habrá arrojado la botella al agua si aquí hay un cesto de basura?
– Es que algunas personas no entienden lo importante que es cuidar el mundo que nos rodea.
– Sí, con lo bonito que es.
– Y además de mantener el agua limpia de basura, también debemos cuidarla para el bien de las plantas, los animales y las personas.
– Por suerte aquí tienes mucha agua.
– Pero si no la cuidamos, corremos el riesgo de no poder usarla nunca más.
– No te preocupes, ahora con nuestros amigos ya sabemos como cuidarla, porque este planeta es nuestra casa.
1. After you watch the video once, watch it again pausing to talk about the pictures. Point to the pictures and repeat what happened in simple phrases like these: Hay un pez. El pez está triste. Doki dice, “¡No te preocupes!” Doki ayuda al pez. El pez dice “¡Gracias!” Doki pone la botella en el cesto de basura. Debemos cuidar el agua. Necesitamos el agua limpia. Los animales necesitan el agua limpia.
2. After you watch the video once, look for objects as you watch again. Ask ¿Dónde está el agua? ¿Dónde está el perro Doki? ¿Dónde está el pez? ¿Dónde está la botella? ¿Dónde está el cesto de basura?
3. Listen for key words or phrases. When you hear the word you are listening for, make a sign, like lifting your hand or taping the table quietly. Listen for one or two words at a time. Then watch again to listen for other words. Try listening for these words:
basura (3 times)
forms of cuidar ( 4 times)
No te preocupes (2 times)
agua (3 times)
4. After you watch the video once, watch again listening and watching for answers to these ¿Quién? questions (Who?). You can answer Doki, el pez o los dos (both of them). Kids can probably answer after watching once, but watch the video again. Repetition is important.

5. Act out the video with toy figures or paper cut-outs using simple phrases like these:
– Hola. ¿Quieres jugar?
– Hay una botella en el agua. Estoy triste.
– Puedo ayudarte.
– ¡Gracias!
– Es importante mantener el agua limpia.
– Sí, es importante para las plantas, los animales y las personas.
6. With children who are learning to read in Spanish, you can do a listening activity by following along on the transcript and pausing the video to see if you are in the right place. After watching the video once, read the transcript together. Then one person follows along on the transcript and the other pauses the video randomly. The person who is reading points to the transcript and says the last word that she heard. Pause the video several times. Then start over with the other person following along on the transcript.
7. With readers, after watching the video complete sentences like these. Then watch again, listening for the words used in the sentences.

8. With children who read, after watching the video, read the transcript as a dialog. Change parts and read it again.
9. With children who read, after watching the video, do a cloze exercise like this one. You can make it more difficult by taking out different words. With this exercise, do not try to write in the words as you listen. Listen once, then write in the words based on meaning, and then listen again to check the answers.
