I am always happy to find a new song to celebrate Valentine’s Day with kids learning Spanish. This song by Mariana Iranzi has vocabulary and verb forms that kids recognize. In addition, it is at a tempo that children can easily sing.
The song provides the opportunity to talk about figurative language. Kids can identify how, in the song, a heart is like the sun, a nightingale, a drum and a flower. The video for the song shows simple stick puppets that reinforce the language. Kids can make and move puppets to the song the way the video does.
Here is a printable for kids to cut out and color to make their own puppets for the words corazón, sol, tambor, ruiseñor and flor. If they like they can include figures of faces too, as in the video.
Mariana Iranzi is from Argentina, and her songs often provide the opportunity to talk about how Spanish varies from country to country. This song uses very standard vocabulary and verb forms, but at the very end it includes the pronoun vos. It provides a perfect introduction to the pronoun because kids will understand it in the context of the song.
These are the lyrics to the Spanish Valentine song, and you can hear it in the video above. Thanks to Mariana Iranzi for sharing her song!
Valentine, valentine won’t you be my valentine?
Valentine, valentine…
Tengo un corazón grande como el sol,
late que late, late tambor
Tengo un corazón, sin penas ni rencor,
canta que canta como el ruiseñor
Tengo un corazón, abierto como flor,
baila que baila con emoción
Tengo un corazón lleno de ilusión,
quiero regalarte todo mi amor
Valentine, valentine won’t you be my valentine?
Valentine, valentine…
Valentine, valentine won’t you be my valentine?
Valentine, valentine…
Tengo un corazón grande como el sol,
late que late, late tambor
Canta y baila con emoción
todo este amor es para dártelo a vos
para dártelo a vos
para dártelo a vos.
