I recently asked readers to share the title of a book they enjoyed reading with their children or classes. These are the books that were mentioned. Froggy se viste and Buenas noches, luna were favorites with a number of people. The books by Bill Martin and Eric Carle and the “Oso” Barefoot Books also came up several times.
Most of the books are translations. I am sure this is largely due to what is available at a reasonable price. The titles are not in any order. I included authors and links if I could find them (and followed Spanish capitalization conventions, even though Amazon does not.)
Classic stories – Caperucita Roja, Ricitos de Oro y los tres osos, La gallinita roja, La Cenicienta
The “classic” set from Combel (Serie Caballo alado – I wrote about these Spanish stories here)

The book I love, Arrullo by Maria Bandara, is available on Amazon. The illustrations are magical and the text is lyrical. The book follows different animal mothers as they rock their babies, tuck them in, sing lullabies, etc. It’s a wonderful way to learn the names of animals and the verbs for nighttime rituals. There is a sweet element of suspense as the animals are introduced by the sounds they make followed by the question “Quien Sera?” If you want a book that isn’t simply a translation of a popular book in English, give this one a try!

Some of our favorites include: La señora de la panedería, and Tómas y la señora de la biblioteca, both by Pat Mora. There is also a collection of simple stories by Margarita Robleda that you can get with a cd of the author reading and singing. The collection is called Rana, Rema, Rimas and the cd is Canciones y cuentos. Hortón escucha a quién is a nice translation of the Dr Seuss that conserves the rhyming aspect of the text. Another cute series is the translation of Oliver Jeffers books: Cómo atrapar una estrella, Perdido y encontrado, and De vuelta a casa. Barefoot Books also publishes two books in Spanish with great accompanying cds of reading/voice acting by native speakers: El fandango de Lola by Anna Witte and the traditional Juan y los frijoles mágicos retold by Richard Walker.
Thanks so much for such a wonderful site – I love the resources you post here!
