spanish quotes

I have used Spanish quotes with students of many different ages. They are good exposure to authentic language and also introduce children to the names of writers and thinkers from Spanish-speaking countries. Printed on colored paper, quotes are an easy way to make a bulletin board. They also make great writing prompts or springboards for small group and class discussion.

The Spanish quotes you use will depend on the age and language level of your students. In general, I look for short quotes with relatively standard sentence structure. Because I am trying to incorporate authentic language, I do not use translations. I do sometimes use proverbs, although dichos and refranes are even more figurative and I often find it easier to work with them separately.

By definition, quotes in Spanish are lacking their original context. I use them related to a specific theme, so children know what they are about. If possible, I also provide some visual support, even if it is only simple clip art. I try to use several quotes in an activity so that students can work with one they choose.

Here are few ways you can use Spanish quotes with children learning the language:
– Students can use quotes to decorate cards for el Día de San Valentín, el Día de la Madre or other holidays.
– Kids can illustrate a quote or make an inspirational poster with a quote.
– Students can make bookmarks with a quote.
– Quotes are great writing prompts. Kids can write about why they agree or disagree with the idea.
– Students can write their own “quote” about the topic, using the famous quote as a model. These make nice bulletin boards.
– You can use quotes to practice paraphrasing, to talk about synonyms and to practice giving concrete examples.
