Video offers a world of language and culture, and of course we can use video to teach listening comprehension skills. To develop Spanish listening skills, we support students with while-listening tasks. Below you’ll find printable activities for several videos to try and also use as examples.
Videos are a great way for children to learn Spanish. Check out all our Spanish videos for kids.
Activities can focus on different Spanish listening skills, such as global listening or listening for specific information. With young students, I do lots of activities to develop their global listening. In other words, I want them to listen for general meaning.
I focus on global listening because students need to get comfortable with not understanding every word. This is so important! They can’t give up and think “I don’t understand” when there are unfamiliar words. They need to build stamina, so they continue to listen for language they do understand. Developing Spanish listening skills to increase global comprehension is essential.
Pre-Listening Activities
Of course, pre-listening come first, to activate or introduce vocabulary related to the topic. We also want students to try to predict the content of they are going to hear. In addition to discussing the title, try giving them a list of key vocabulary (if it is familiar) or selected images and having them make assumptions about the content.
In addition, you can do narrow listening before the larger task. There are examples of some of my favorite narrow pre-listening activities in Spanish Listening Activities You Aren’t Doing (And Should Be). After pre-listening, we can focus on developing Spanish listening skills with while-listening activities.
While-Listening Activities
One of the while-listening tasks I give students is a set of questions where they choose the correct answer. You can find examples of this type of question below using the Habla Jorge videos, and you can make them for any video. To use these questions to develop Spanish listening skills, I follow this structure
- Pre-listening activities (see above)
- Watch the entire video without interruption.
- In pairs or small groups, have students tell each other what they understood and then share with the class. I usually record the information on the board.
- In pairs or small groups, read over the questions and try to answer.
- Watch again to verify answers and answer additional questions.

There are many ways to build Spanish listening skills, and comprehension questions about videos are one of the best. Video provides students with a range of voices and cultural input. It is also high-interest, and there are videos available for a wide range of content.
