This easy card trick is framed as a story about three thieves. With a couple of simple props, it is a fun way to share an old trick with young Spanish learners.

The video below is excellent listening practice. I’ve included a download of the transcript because it is useful for teachers and can also be used as a reading activity.

Stories for language learners need pictures and props so kids can understand them. This easy card trick is perfect! With very basic props, you can create comprehensible input. You can see my son-in-law Jorge tell the story and do the trick in the video below.

The story is that a policeman knows that 3 thieves are going to rob a bank. The 3 thieves enter the bank by 3 different doors. The policeman traps them all together. The trick is that the three jacks are placed in different places in the deck, but then pulled out together.

¡Hola amiguitos! ¿Cómo están el día de hoy? ¿Quieren ver un truco con cartas?

Este es el banco, y ustedes saben que en el banco hay mucho dinero.

Y estos son los tres ladrones, y ellos son muy malos. Quieren robar todo el dinero del banco.

Y yo soy el policía, y soy el bueno. Sé que los ladrones van a entrar uno por la puerta de arriba, el segundo por la puerta del medio y el tercero va a entrar por la puerta de abajo.

Una noche muy oscura, los ladrones entraron – el primero por la puerta de arriba, el segundo por la puerta del medio y el tercero por la puerta de abajo. ¡Tengo que apurarme! Ellos van a robar todo el dinero del banco.

Entonces entro al banco y busco a los malos ladrones. Busco por todo el banco, y ¡los voy a capturar a ellos juntos! Los capturé amiguitos, ¡todos están juntos!
