Teaching Spanish to Children – How to make it work

Have fun!  Enjoy spending time with your child.

Repeat, repeat, repeat.  Use the same word, in the same situation, over and over.  Keep it simple and be consistent.

Let her listen. Children must hear and understand words before they use them. Do not insist that your child say anything.  Use the language as often as you can and be confident that your child is learning.

Pace yourself, and keep the long term goal in mind. No single day or single activity will matter in the long run.

Invest in materials and experiences.  Create a rich and varied learning environment that includes books, videos, music, and games.  Enroll your child in Spanish classes if possible. Consider travel and language schools in Spanish-speaking countries if it is an option for your family.

Be realistic. There are many misconceptions about language learning. Be reasonable in your expectations and celebrate your child’s progress.
