Songs are a good way for children to learn the days of the week in Spanish. If they understand the concept of the week in English, they are learning new labels. As they apply the words to their daily activities they will learn the words at a deeper level, but songs are a good way to start. Here are two songs that work well to teach the Spanish days of the week. The first focuses on the day of the week and the second teaches the days of the week and weather.

Song for learning the days of the week in Spanish

This song, Los días de la semana, is by Dámaris Gelabert. The tune is easy and there is plenty of repetition of the Spanish days. The words semana (week) and siete (seven) are also a part of the song, and all these words reinforce each other.

This video has the words for the Spanish days of the week on the screen, and it also has the numbers and images for cole (school) and casa (home). The lyrics and a translation follow the video. You can buy the mp3 of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004AQ1EUK/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=teawitmus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B004AQ1EUK">Los Días de la Semana<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=teawitmus-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B004AQ1EUK" target="_blank">Los días de la semana on Amazon.

The days of the week in Spanish – Lyrics and translation

Lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sabado, y domingo.
Lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sabado, y domingo.
Son siete días a la semana,
Cinco en el cole y dos en casa.
Hoy los aprendo cantando así.
Lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sabado, y domingo.
Lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sabado, y domingo.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
There are seven days in the week,
Five in school and two at home.
Today I learn them singing this way.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Song for learning the Spanish days of the week and weather expressions

This song, Los días de la semana, is from the children’s musical Shalambá. The musical is produced by Andrés Meseguer, who produces other musicals in Spain and also CDs of children’s music. This song associates each day of the week with a different weather condition. This is an effective teaching strategy because kids can associate the days with something visual. Of course, it does not rain every Monday, but for the purposes of learning the vocabulary, that does not matter.

This video has the words for the Spanish days of the week on the screen and also images that make the weather vocabulary clear. The lyrics and a translation follow the video.

Song for learning the Spanish days of the week and weather expressions – Lyrics and translation

Los lunes llueve mucho.
Los martes hace sol.
Los miercoles, nublado está.
Los jueves, ¡qué calor!
Los viernes hace viento,
las hojas caen al son.
Los sábados al parque voy.
Es domingo ¡Qué ilusión!

Los días de la semana
son siete nada más.
Y ahora tú los vas a recordar:
lunes, martes, miercoles, jueves, viernes, sabado, domingo.

Mondays it rains a lot.
Tuesdays it is sunny.
Wednesdays it is cloudy
Thursdays, so hot!
Fridays, it is windy,
The leaves fall to the sound.
Saturdays, I go to the park.
Sundays, how exciting! (or, Isn’t it wonderful? ¡Qué ilusión! is a common expression to express happiness.)

The days of the week,
there are only seven.
And now you are going to remember them:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

Unfortuantely, the songs from Shalambá are not yet available to buy in the US. You can listen to all of Andrés Meseguer’s songs on his website, and one of the CDs, La banda de Ary Tikky, is available on iTunes.

Talking about pictures is a great way to speak Spanish with children. Use this photo of a little girl and her mom playing in the snow to help children learn Spanish. The questions that follow, like the questions in all the Learn Spanish with Pictures activities, are ordered to help children master the vocabulary and gain confidence with the language. Start with Describe the photo (1), and be sure to point to the objects in the picture as you talk about them. Use gestures, facial expressions and actions to help your child understand what the words mean. When your child understands the key words, ask questions from Choose the answer (2) and Pointing and counting (3). Ask the questions in Yes and No (4) to practice more of the vocabulary used in the description. If your child is comfortable enough with the Spanish words to produce them easily, include the questions in Say a little more (5). The questions in What about you? (6) give your child a chance to talk about herself. You will find a list of the words used in the description and questions in Vocabulary (7). Read more about Learn Spanish with Pictures here.

This slideshare presentation has nine short Spanish poems about winter. They were compiled by a teacher in Alicante, Spain. One of the poems is a traditional song that I wrote about here: Spanish song – Winter. Unfortunately, I do not know the authors or sources of the other poems. You will find a Spanish transcript below the slide presentation. If you recognize any of the other poems, I would love to know if they are traditional, or who wrote them.

Spanish poems – Winter

All of these poems are short and can be used with Spanish language learners. The simplest poem is just four lines. It does not rhyme in English, but has assonant rhyme in Spanish.

La nieve cae. / Snow is falling.
El frío llegó. / The cold arrived.
Gorro y bufanda / Hat and scarf
me pongo yo. / I put on.

The others are a little longer, but all of them have common winter vocabulary. These poems are an excellent length to read with young Spanish learners. Kids love the rhythm and rhyme, and you could easily add actions, illustrate the poems together, or sing them to a simple tune. ¡Que se disfruten del invierno!

This lovely Spanish song, Hola buen día, día is wonderful for children learning the language. The song is a poem by Douglas Wright, a well-known author and illustrator from Argentina. Douglas is also a musician and performer. He has set the poem to music and shares the song on his blog El Jardín de Douglas.

I wrote an article about using the poem Hola buen día, día with Spanish language learners in November. Douglas Wright illustrates his work, and the poem and the illustration are available on his blog. The article I wrote includes ideas for teaching the poem using the illustration. You can find that post here: Spanish poem for children.

The Spanish song Hola buen día, día makes the poem even more accessible to language learners. The rhythm helps children memorize the song. Singing is also excellent pronunciation practice, as children absorb and imitate native-speaker Spanish. As you will hear, the song is done as an echo. It is perfect for sharing with children!

Listen to the Spanish song Hola buen día, día.

These are the lyrics of the song. You can also find the poem and the illustration on El Jardín de Douglas using this link: Spanish poem with illustration A translation follows these lyrics.

“Hola, buen día, día”,
digo con alegría;
digo “buen día, cielo”
digo “buen día, sol”;
esta vida es mi vida,
la vida de este día;
este día es mi día:
este día soy yo.

Hi, good day, day
I say happily;
I say “Good day, sky”
I say “Good day, sun”
This life is my life,
My life today.
This day is my day:
This day I am I. (or as we often say “I am me”)

The poem, illustration and song of Hola buen día, día are a wonderful combination of materials for children learning Spanish. They allow kids to work with the language in different ways and provide for the repetition they need to really learn Spanish. I so appreciate that Douglas Wright generously makes his work available on his blog!

This extensive set of free printable materials has lots of wonderful activities for Spanish language learners. It is offered by Udicom on the educational portal Educarm of the Department of Education in Murcia, Spain.

These printable PDFs are designed for native Spanish speakers with a focus on language in context. The set includes a variety of activities that can be used with Spanish language learners at different levels. These materials are divided into 11 units. Each unit is divided into 6 sections with many different activities. Each unit also includes sets of activities for several letters.

The first section in each unit, Bloque 1, begins with a vocabulary list and picture cards with the image, the word in print and the word in cursive. These are followed by vocabulary exercises like crossing out the picture that does not belong, cutting and pasting into categories and ordering a series of pictures.

All the sections in a unit have exercises for beginning readers like matching the picture to the word, categorizing, completing the word, ordering syllables, and puzzles like crosswords and wordsearches. In addition, there is practice with basic grammar points like gender and articles (el or la) and forming plurals. There are also activities with basic concepts like shapes, colors, and size.

The exercises are from Spain, so some of the words, nouns in particular, differ from what is used in Latin America. However, the vast majority of the vocabulary is standard. There is a lot of material in these units and much of it will be useful to teachers and parents working with Spanish language learners.

These materials are offered free of charge for educational purposes. You can accept the terms of use here and you will be taken to the index of Printable Spanish Activities.

You can go directly to the index to look over the activities, but do go back and accept the terms of use (to not modify the work and leave the copyright intact) if you find materials you can use.

These are the 11 units:

1. El colegio y mi aula. - School and my classroom
2. El cuerpo y los sentidos. – The body and the senses
3. Los alimentos. – Food
4. Las prendas de vestir. – Clothing
The questions that follow, like all the Learn Spanish with Pictures activities, are ordered to help children master the vocabulary and gain confidence with the language. Start with Describe the photo (1) and be sure to point to the objects in the picture as you talk about them. You will find a list of the words used in the description and questions in Vocabulary (7).Read more about Learn Spanish with Pictures.

It is snowed here in Wisconsin, so it is time for a winter song in Spanish. This song is called Nos gusta el invierno, Me gusta el invierno or Invierno, invierno. It has several titles because the first lines vary in different versions. The winter clothes the song mentions vary a little, too. Children in Spanish-speaking countries also learn this song as a poem.

All of these versions have the line Y por la Navidad (because of Christmas). You can change the word Navidad to another -dad word, or any word that ends in a stressed syllable with a as the vowel. Here are some possibilities: y por la majestad, y por la felicidad, y por la festividad, y por la suavidad, y por la preciosidad, y por poderse patinar, y por poderse deslizar.

You can hear Laura from Yo canto y bailo esta canción sing Invierno, invierno, this Spanish song about winter, in this video. As always, many thanks for permission to embed the video!

These are the words to this version:
Invierno, invierno
¿Por qué nos gustará?
Por la nieve blanca
Y por la Navidad.
El frío del invierno
Ya tiene solución:
El gorro, los guantes y la calefacción.

You can hear a preschool class singing another version on the blog Diario de una maestra. Just scroll down to Canción del invierno: Spanish song about winter. Here are the words to that version:

Me gusta el invierno.
No sé porque será.
Por la nieve blanca
O por la Navidad.
El frío del invierno
Tiene una solución:
El gorro, los guantes
Y la calefacción.

There is a slightly different version that begins:
Me gusta el invierno ¿Por qué me gustará? and then mentions los guantes, el abrigo y la calefacción.
You can find that version with a small printable picture of a snowman here: Spanish song about winter.

Finally, there is a version that begins Nos gusta el invierno ¿Por qué nos gustará? and ends el gorro, el abrigo, y la calefacción. You can find that version and several other Spanish poems about winter for kids about on the blog Primer Ciclo. If you keep scrolling down, you will also find a nice collection of paintings of winter. These are wonderful for talking about winter with kids learning Spanish.

What a happy way for kids to greet the day! This poem is perfect for children learning Spanish. It is joyful and affirming. This is a short poem with common vocabulary and great rhythm, and it would be an excellent choice for a class to recite to begin the day. It is also a wonderful poem to read with children at home.

Hola, buen día, día is by the well-known Argentine writer and illustrator Douglas Wright. He generously shares his work on his blog El jardín de Douglas and gave me permission to share it here. Douglas Wright illustrates his poetry. In addition to adding a wonderful dimension to the poems, the drawings are valuable for teaching children Spanish. Use the link to read this morning poem with the illustration. Click on the illustration to enlarge it.

This is the poem and a translation follows. Below you will find suggestions for using the poem with children learning Spanish.

Hola, buen día, día

“Hola, buen día, día”,
digo con alegría;
digo “buen día, cielo”
digo “buen día, sol”;
esta vida es mi vida,
la vida de este día;
este día es mi día:
este día soy yo.

Hi, good day, day
I say happily;
I say “Good day, sky”
I say “Good day, sun”
This life is my life,
My life today.
This day is my day:
This day I am I. (or as we often say “I am me”)

Here are a few ideas for using this poem with Spanish language learners:

- Before you read the poem, talk about the picture, pointing to the different things as you say them. Vocabulary: el/la niño/a, el sol, el cielo, los pájaros, las nubes, la mariposa, las plantas/las flores, el pasto

- Read the poem together. Add actions to reinforce the meaning of the words. For example, you can lift your arms like the child in the drawing when you say buen día día, wave at the sun and the sky when you say buen día to them, point at yourself when you say mi día, and hug yoursef when you say soy yo.

- Beginners can use the vocabulary they know to greet people and things: Buen día, amigo; Buen día, perro; Buen día, casa; Buen día, escuela, etc.

- Ask questions like these if they are appropriate for your child’s level of Spanish. The questions in parenthesis are simpler because children hear the vocabulary in the question.
1. ¿A quién saluda el niño primero? (¿El niño saluda al día o a la noche?)
2. ¿Cómo se siente el niño? (¿El niño está alegre o está triste?)

- This poem lends itself to drawing activities like these:
1. Children can draw a picture to illustrate “Esta vida es mi vida.”
2. Children can draw a picture to illustrate “la vida de este día.” They can also circle things in the illustration of “esta vida es mi vida” that they are going to do that day.

With these free printable pictures, kids find the differences and practice common Spanish words. These Spanish activities, Encuentra las diferencias, are from Minihogar Kids, the children’s section of El Minihogar. The puzzles are designed for native-speakers, so the solutions are in Spanish. Kids can use the words as they look for differences and then see the written Spanish words when they check their answers.

There are three Hello Kitty scenes and two scenes with the Simpsons. Children do not have to be familiar with the characters for the activities to be good Spanish language practice. If you play online, you can zoom in to see the details. If you print the activities, print them in landscape (except the house), so that they are not scaled down to fit the page.

To make the most of these Spanish activities, talk about the picture with your child first. Use the vocabulary from the lists below to name the things in the picture before you start to look for the differences. You can use simple sentences like Veo un avión (I see an airplane), Hay tres casas (There are three houses) or Me gustan los globos (I like the balloons).

Point out differences in the two pictures by naming the object that is different: El pez es diferente. When your child points out a difference, say the word: Sí, la flor es diferente. Often there is no need to explain the difference; you can both see it.

Sometimes the difference is in the number of something or when an object is missing. Then it is easy to say No hay un caracol (There is no snail.) or Hay tres peces en este dibujo. Hay cuatro allí. (There are three fish in this picture. There are four there.).

The solutions to these Spanish activities are below each picture and list the key words. For example, if a picture of a fish on a beach umbrella is different, the answer key says: pez sombrilla (fish umbrella).

These are the links to the Spanish activities and the words that are used in the solutions. Be sure to use the words as you talk about the pictures and look for the differences.

I use this Spanish song for kids with preschoolers and beginning language learners. I suggested it on Spanish Playground about a year and a half ago, but I wanted to share a couple of variations and a great video from a preschool in Spain.

La luna y el sol teaches basic concepts about the sun and the moon: the moon is small and the sun is bigger; the moon comes out at night and the sun comes out during the day; the moon is cold and the sun is hot. There is lots of excellent vocabulary for children learning Spanish and it is easy to add actions to reinforce the meaning of the words.

There are several versions of this song. You can hear the one I teach in a video from yocantoesta here: Spanish songs for kids – La luna y el sol. I teach it to beginners when they are learning tener frío and tener calor and it fits in well.

These are the words and a translation:

La luna es muy pequeña y el sol es muy mayor.
La luna tiene frío y el sol tiene calor.
La luna sale de noche y el sol sale de día.
A bailar, a bailar, a bailar con la luna y el sol.
A bailar, a bailar, a bailar, a bailar con los dos.

The moon is very small and the sun much bigger.
The moon is cold and the sun is hot.
The moon comes out at night and the sun comes out in the day.
Let’s dance, let’s dance, let’s dance with the moon and the sun.
Let’s dance, let’s dance, let’s dance with both of them.

The variations of this song often change the verb in the last line to saltar or aplaudir. They also change the second line and use estar instead of salir.

This is one common variation:

La luna es muy pequeña,
y el sol es muy mayor.
La luna tiene frío,
y el sol tiene calor.
La luna está de noche,
y el sol está de día.
A aplaudir, a aplaudir, a aplaudir con la luna y el sol.
A aplaudir, a aplaudir, a aplaudir con la luna y el sol.

The moon is very small and the sun much bigger.
The moon is cold and the sun is hot.
The moon is out at night and the sun is out in the day.
Let’s clap, let’s clap, let’s clap with the moon and the sun.
Let’s clap, let’s clap, let’s clap with the moon and the sun.

Here is another variation of this song. It leaves out the line about day and night and instead repeats that the moon is small and the sun is bigger.

Also, in this version, the sun warms the moon. I love the actions that Marta, a preschool teacher from León, Spain, taught her students! You can see a video on her blog, Tralará, here: Spanish songs for kids- La luna y el sol.

La luna es muy pequeña y el sol es muy mayor.
La luna tiene frío y el sol le da calor.
La luna es muy pequeña y el sol es muy mayor.
A saltar, a saltar con la luna y con el sol.
A saltar, a saltar con la luna y con el sol.

The moon is very small and the sun much bigger.
The moon is cold and the sun gives it heat (warms it up).
The moon is very small and the sun is much bigger.
Let’s jump, let’s jump, let’s jump with the moon and the sun.
Let’s jump, let’s jump, let’s jump with the moon and the sun.

This a YouTube video of the same version: Spanish songs for kids – La luna y el sol
