Listen to this short Spanish audio description of a very common object. Can you guess what it is? This is one of a series of videos called Adivina la palabra de hoy (Guess Today’s Word). The Spanish audio in these short videos is excellent. The series is produced by the Fundación de la Lengua Española, a private non-profit from Spain that promotes the teaching of Spanish. In this video, two girls describe a common word for viewers to guess. At the end of the video, the word appears on the screen. The video is short, about one minute long.

Listening to this Spanish audio is an excellent language learning activity. The words in the descriptions tend to be used together or are associated with the word you are trying to guess. This is an effective way to expand vocabulary.

Of course, this Spanish audio also makes great listening practice. The sentences are short and the children speak directly to the camera. Children will not understand every word of the description, but that is fine. They are practicing listening for the main idea, that is, how the words that they do understand come together to communicate one concept.

For example, in this video many children will understand the clues amarillo, fruta, comen, monos and abrir. That is probably enough to guess the word. Listening for words that they understand is an important skill in language learning. Children need the opportunity to practice in order to develop the ability to distinguish the words they know in a stream of language.

Vocabulary for the Spanish audio

This is a list of the common Spanish words that the children use in the following video. The words in the list are in the order you hear them. You can listen for these words with your child and try to guess what is being described. The mystery word will be shown at the end of the video, but if you want to know before you listen, scroll down. A transcript, translation and the answer follow the video.

amarillo – yellow

This is wonderful Spanish song to teach or review colors. The song is called Todas las cosas tienen su color and it is by <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NUSRNG/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=teawitmus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003NUSRNG">Todas Las Cosas Tienen Su Color<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=teawitmus-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B003NUSRNG" target="_blank">Siempre así y los Caños. The beginning of the song relates colors to objects, reinforcing the color word and the words for the different items. The second part of the song is a list of things, but the song does not mention their color. This list lends itself to lots of different activities. Kids can color pictures they are given, classify the objects by color or draw their own pictures.

This video has great pictures and also has the lyrics on the screen. I have included the lyrics below, too. This is another video of the Spanish song about colors with pictures than children have drawn.

These two games with Spanish audio teach children pronunciation, animal vocabulary and letter sounds. They are from the site Leo lo que veo (I read what I see). The games were designed for native Spanish speakers, but work well with children learning Spanish. These games can be played by children of any age and any level.

Both games are structured as board games. Players roll a dice and move around the board. Each space has a shape that changes to show an animal and the word for that animal. When the player clicks the space there is Spanish audio that says the word. Players then find the other space with the same shape, click it to hear another animal, and identify the sound that is the same in both words.

Adapting the online games with Spanish audio to your child’s age and level

Children who do not read yet can move around the board listening to the Spanish audio to hear the words for the animals. They can also match the shapes and hear the Spanish audio for both animals. Reinforce the vocabulary by repeating the words in simple sentences: Es una rana. (It’s a frog.) Veo el caballo. (I see the horse.) El conejo es bonito. (The rabbit is pretty.). Kids can also practice numbers in Spanish as they roll the dice and move around the board.

Children who are beginning to read can use this game to practice hearing and reading these common syllables. They can use the words under the pictures and match the sounds to the letters. They will also practice correct pronunciation by repeating the Spanish audio they hear.

Instructions for the online games with Spanish audio

These are the rules of the games and a translation. Adapt the game for the level and age of your child. Just listening and associating the word with the picture of the animal will introduce her to new vocabulary and the sounds of the Spanish.

1.-Tira el dado y cuenta hasta la casilla. / Roll the dice and count the number of spaces.
2.- Haz clic en la figura y escucha el sonido. Repítelo y léelo tú. / Click on the shape and listen to the sound. Repeat it and read it yourself.
3.- Busca en el tablero la otra casilla con el mismo dibujo. / Look around the board for the other space that has the same shape.
4.- Haz clic en la figura y escucha el sonido. Repítelo y léelo tú. / Click on the shape and listen to the sound.
¿Cuál es la sílaba y el sonido que se repiten? Compara y lee. / Which syllable and sound are repeated?
5.- Vuelve a tirar el dado y sigue jugando. / Roll again and keep playing.

Caballito blanco (Little White Horse) is one of the first songs my children learned in Spanish. We happen to have a white horse, so my kids loved it. Children all over the Spanish-speaking world sing this traditional song. I have also seen Caballito blanco identified as a jump rope rhyme, but my family learned the song and that is how I have used it in teaching Spanish to children.

There are several versions of Caballito blanco. The longest version has three distinct parts. The first asks the white horse to take the singer home, the second is about three sheep, and the third part tells Juana to get up and light a candle to investigate a noise. Often, children learn only the first two, and many recordings are done with just those two parts. I use a version with just the first two parts for teaching.

I like to sing this song with children learning Spanish for several reasons. First, it has very concrete, common vocabulary. It also has several verb forms that children learn right away: tengo (I have), tienes (you have), da (gives). Finally, the clear rhyme scheme reinforces the correct prononciation of the Spanish vowels.

You will find the lyrics for all three parts below. I have included common variations in parenthesis and a translation.

Caballito blanco – Spanish song – listen online

You can listen to several different versions of this song online.

Spanish song – Caballito Blanco. This is the longest version and it has the words on the screen.
Spanish song - Caballito Blanco. This is another version with all three parts.
Spanish song – Caballito Blanco. This video uses the first two parts of the song. I like the photographs of horses and sheep! The video supports the words to the song well.

Caballito blanco – Spanish song lyrics

Caballito blanco,
llévame de aquí, (sácame de aquí,)
llévame a mi pueblo
donde yo nací.

Tengo, tengo, tengo,
tú no tienes nada,
tengo tres ovejas
en una cabaña. (en una manada.)

Una me da leche,
otra me da lana,
y otra, mantequilla
para la semana.

Levántate Juana
y prende la vela (a prender la vela)
para ver quien anda
por la cabecera.
Son los angelitos
que andan de carrera
despertando al niño
para ir a la escuela.

Caballito blanco – Spanish song translation

Little white horse,
Take me away.
Take me to the town,
Where I was born.

I have, I have, I have,
You have nothing.
I have three sheep,
In a cabin. (herd)

One gives me milk,
Another gives me wool,
And another, butter,
for the week.

Get up Juana
and light the candle (to light the candle)
to see who is walking
on the headboard.

It is the little angels,
hurrying along,
waking the child
to go to school.

Caballito blanco – Spanish song downloads from Amazon

There are many versions of this song available to download on Amazon and iTunes. If I am using a song with children learning Spanish, I look for a version that is clear and not too fast.

Here are a few versions of Caballito blanco that work well with Spanish language learners:

This lovely Spanish song, Hola buen día, día is wonderful for children learning the language. The song is a poem by Douglas Wright, a well-known author and illustrator from Argentina. Douglas is also a musician and performer. He has set the poem to music and shares the song on his blog El Jardín de Douglas.

I wrote an article about using the poem Hola buen día, día with Spanish language learners in November. Douglas Wright illustrates his work, and the poem and the illustration are available on his blog. The article I wrote includes ideas for teaching the poem using the illustration. You can find that post here: Spanish poem for children.

The Spanish song Hola buen día, día makes the poem even more accessible to language learners. The rhythm helps children memorize the song. Singing is also excellent pronunciation practice, as children absorb and imitate native-speaker Spanish. As you will hear, the song is done as an echo. It is perfect for sharing with children!

Listen to the Spanish song Hola buen día, día.

These are the lyrics of the song. You can also find the poem and the illustration on El Jardín de Douglas using this link: Spanish poem with illustration A translation follows these lyrics.

“Hola, buen día, día”,
digo con alegría;
digo “buen día, cielo”
digo “buen día, sol”;
esta vida es mi vida,
la vida de este día;
este día es mi día:
este día soy yo.

Hi, good day, day
I say happily;
I say “Good day, sky”
I say “Good day, sun”
This life is my life,
My life today.
This day is my day:
This day I am I. (or as we often say “I am me”)

The poem, illustration and song of Hola buen día, día are a wonderful combination of materials for children learning Spanish. They allow kids to work with the language in different ways and provide for the repetition they need to really learn Spanish. I so appreciate that Douglas Wright generously makes his work available on his blog!

The traditional Spanish game, Debajo del puente (Under the Bridge), has several versions. It is a hand-clapping game and is also used as a jump-rope rhyme. The hand-clapping game ends with the kids freezing in place and trying not to laugh or move. As the words indicate, the first one who moves gets a pinch. Kids love this game, but be sure they know that the pinch should not be hard!

Rhymes like this are wonderful for pronunciation and also for absorbing the structures of Spanish. Because children memorize rhymes, they can produce quantities of Spanish with correct sounds and grammar. This helps them learn the rhythm and the deep structure of the Spanish language.

Of course, it is important that children understand what the rhyme means. One simple way to do this is by drawing a picture of a snake under a bridge brushing his teeth. You can also teach the rhyme with gestures. Use your hands to make a bridge, a slithering snake, and brush your teeth. Nod your head yes for verdad que sí and shake your head no for verdad que no.

This is one common version of the Spanish game Debajo del puente. Any simple hand-clapping pattern will do, such as: clap, right to right, clap, left to left, clap, both hands. You can hear this Spanish game by clicking on the audio link.

The translation is word-for word, with no attempt to keep the rhythm or rhyme. I include it here for adults learning Spanish with their children.

Audio of Spanish game - Debajo del puente (hand-clapping)

Debajo del puente / Under the bridge
había una serpiente, / there was a snake
lavándose los dientes / brushing his teeth
con agua caliente. / with hot water.

¿Verdad que sí?/ Isn’t that right?
Tilín, tilín, / Tilín, tilín
¿Verdad que no? / Isn’t that wrong?
Tolón tolón, / Tolón, tolón
Si te mueves o te ríes, / If you move or you laugh,
te daré un pellizcón. / I will give you a pinch.

This is another version of this Spanish hand-clapping game.

Debajo de un puente,
había una serpiente
Lavándose los dientes
con agua caliente
Si dice que sí,
chi qui, chi qui chi,
Si dice que no,
do bo, do bo do
Si te ríes o te mueves,
te daré un pellizcón.

The words are slightly different when the rhyme is used as a jump rope rhyme. This is one common version and a translation. If the child jumping rope answers no, she keeps jumping. If she answers yes, she runs out.

Debajo de un puente / Under a bridge
había una serpiente / there was a snake
con ojos de cristal / with glass eyes
para ir al hospital. / to go to the hospital
¿Quiere usted salir? / Do you want to go?

The last line can also be:
¿Quieres salir de aquí, sí o no? / Do you want to leave here, yes or no?

They also introduce correct Spanish pronunciation, giving children the chance to hear native speakers, absorb the sounds of Spanish and practice these sounds. You can hear samples of both these CDs and learn about Beth Manners’ other language learning products on her website Fun French and Spanish.

Playtime Spanish for Kids is a Spanish audio CD that introduces children to topics like greetings, numbers, animals, the days of the week, and colors. It also has a substantial cultural component, with imaginary trips to Spain and Mexico.

The first six tracks on this CD model and teach greetings, introductions, and responses to “How are you?”. With songs, actions, the game Simon Says, and a story, the CD presents the vocabulary and structures for these situations and also provides the repetition and reinforcement that children need to learn language.

Most of the cultural component on this CD is in English. It is a brief introduction to two countries where Spanish is spoken. Kids hear a little information about Spain – the old buildings of Barcelona, the beautiful beaches and meals. Related to meals, they hear and repeat tengo hambre (I’m hungry), and the words el desayuno (breakfast), el almuerzo (lunch) and la cena (dinner). They are also introduced to the typical Spanish foods gazpacho and paella. On an imaginary trip to Mexico, kids hear mariachi music and dance the Mexican hat dance. These cultural elements make children aware of Spanish-speaking countries in a very general, age-appropriate way.

This Spanish audio CD also introduces kids to animals, the days of the week and colors. There is a substantial amount of vocabulary and it is presented much more quickly than the initial lessons about greetings. The meaning is clear because the Spanish words are presented with the English. Also, sound effects reinforce the animal vocabulary, and all of the words are used in songs. Still, children should not expect to be able to remember the meaning of these words or be able to repeat them right away. This CD is meant to be listened to many times, and over time children will become familiar with these Spanish words.

Fun Spanish for Kids is another Spanish audio CD that introduces children to lots of vocabulary including food, colors, weather and common verbs. These words are presented in translation; kids hear the words in English and Spanish. Like Playtime Spanish for Kids, this Spanish audio is meant to be listened to many times. Lists of Spanish words go by quickly, and beginning Spanish learners will not remember them at first. With time, kids will become familiar with the vocabulary.

This Spanish audio, Fun Spanish for Kids, also introduces kids to the basics of verb conjugation. With a stuffed animal, children do a series of actions. First, they do it themselves saying, for example, Yo me siento (I sit down). Then, children have their animal friend do it and say, Tú te sientas. (You sit down). Next, they both do it and say Nosotros nos sentamos (We sit down.). Combining the language with actions, helps children process Spanish at a deeper level.

Throughout the CD children are encouraged to repeat the Spanish they hear. The children on the CD speak clearly and model correct Spanish pronunciation, so that kids can absorb the sounds of the language.

Both of these Spanish audio CDs introduce children to a large amount of Spanish vocabulary and the sounds of the language. The words are presented in conjunction with English, so the meaning is clear. With time and repetition, children will become familiar with the Spanish on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/096628769X/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=teawitmus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=096628769X">Name Your Link<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=teawitmus-20&l=as2&o=1&a=096628769X" target="_blank">Playtime Spanish for Kids and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0966287630/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=teawitmus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0966287630">Name Your Link<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=teawitmus-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0966287630" target="_blank">Fun Spanish for Kids and have a substantial head-start on learning the language.

Let’s Learn to Speak Spanish: Conversational Workbook and CD is a set of worksheets and activities by Susana Murphy, published by the non-profit One World Foundation. Susana sent me a copy of this book because she realized it would be helpful to many Spanish Playground readers. These activities are an excellent supplement to an elementary Spanish program. The book is also a great choice for parents who want to reinforce a school program or introduce their child to Spanish at home. The exercises cover the most common introductory topics and the pages can be photocopied. It takes tons of material to give kids enough exposure to these basics. This workbook gives teachers and parents an easy way to reinforce what kids are learning.

Most of these Spanish activities are based on translation and there is a glossary in the back of the book. This format makes the book is a good choice for parents who do not have much knowledge of Spanish but want to introduce school-age children to Spanish at home. The workbook comes with an audio CD of native speakers from Costa Rica, Colombia and the Dominican Republic. With this support, parents and kids can hear the correct pronunciation and practice the sounds of Spanish. These are written activities, but I really like how consistently this book reminds kids to use the spoken language. They need lots encouragement to speak Spanish!

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0983522340/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=teawitmus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0983522340">Name Your Link<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=teawitmus-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0983522340" target="_blank">Let’s Learn to Speak Spanish includes activities on topics like the alphabet, greetings, numbers, the days of the week, the months of the year, and the weather. There are also worksheets for units like colors, food, animals, clothing, body parts and places. The grammar practice is basic and appropriate for many elementary programs and even middle school programs. In addition to the singular forms of regular -ar verbs in the present, the book has exercises on ir, tener, querer and gustar.

For each of the topics covered, there are several different Spanish activities. You will find word searches, scrambled words, and pictures to color. Kids will choose which word does not belong, match words to pictures, copy Spanish sentences and complete sentences by filling in the blank. The book includes flash cards of common phrases and vocabulary and also mini-books to practice the verbs quiero, voy and tengo. All of the worksheets provide sufficient practice, but are not so long that they become boring. Also, I love the choice of vocabulary in this book. It is truly representative of a standard Spanish that will be understood worldwide.

Many of these topics include a section called ¿Sabes? on one of the worksheets. These sections are a wonderful collection of cultural and linguistic information. The explanations are short with clear examples and include all kinds of fun, useful and very accurate information.

There is no doubt that this book will save teachers time and provide students with an opportunity to practice the basics. I think that <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0983522340/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=teawitmus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0983522340">Name Your Link<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=teawitmus-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0983522340" target="_blank">Let’s Learn to Speak Spanish is also a great model of the kinds of Spanish activities that teachers can make. For parents who want to introduce kids to Spanish at home or reinforce a school program, there are a variety of activities that will keep kids entertained while giving them some of the essential practice that it takes to learn Spanish.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0983522340/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=teawitmus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0983522340">Name Your Link<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=teawitmus-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0983522340" target="_blank">

Online Free Spanish has added more syllable activities. This set uses the letter m plus the vowels: ma, me, mi, mo, mu. These activities are perfect for beginning Spanish readers and are also a good way to expose kids to new words. You can read more about why these activities work so well for children learning Spanish and find suggestions for additional activities using the printed pages here: Spanish syllable activities.

These syllable activities have several parts that build on each other. First, the syllables are pronounced with native-speaker audio. Each syllable is used in words and there are images to make the meaning of the words clear. The words are then used in sentences, and the sentences also have pictures so that children will understand them. There is audio for the syllables, the words and the sentences. Use the right-left arrows to move through the vowel sounds: ma, me, mi, mo, mu. Use the up-down arrows to see and hear the words for each syllable used in sentences.

I tell my students to just listen first and then encourage them to repeat, copying the pronunciation. Here are a few other ideas for reinforcing Spanish syllables with your child:

- Look for the syllables in stories, songs, labels and the calendar. Wherever you see Spanish text, you will be able to find them.
- See how many words you can find with syllables of a certain letter in a (short!) story.
- Make additional activities using the images and words from OnlineFreeSpanish. You can print the pages and cut and paste, so they are easy to make.

You many want to add other common words with ma, me, mi, mo, mu. Here are a few more you can use:
ma – maleta, manzana, mano, mapa, tomate
me – mesa, melón, camello
mi – micrófono, amigo, hormiga
mo – mono, molino, remo, moto, moño, moneda, mochila
mu – muñeca, música, museo, muchacha

Try making activities like these:
- Circle the picture that corresponds to the syllable.

ma

me

- Circle the beginning sound that matches the picture. When you do this kind of activity together, say the word aloud looking at the picture. Then, find the sound that matches.

mu me mi me mi ma

- Draw a line from the picture to the word. Look at the picture and say the word first. Then find the word that matches.

- Give children the picture and the word with the key syllable missing. Kids complete with the correct syllable.

__ __ ñeca ca __ __

- Give children the picture and the word with the letters scrambled. They unscramble and write the word in the blanks.

- Match the image from OnlineFreeSpanish to the sentence.

¡Muchísimas gracias a OnlineFreeSpanish por estas actividades!

This online Spanish game with native-speaker audio is a good way for children to practice vocabulary and listening comprehension while they are sorting, grouping and matching. Listening to native-speaker Spanish is also important for pronunciation. The set of activities is called Un poquito de orden and there are three temas (topics), each with several activities.

Click on the link below to reach the online Spanish game. The site sometimes takes a little while to load. It works really well once it has loaded. On the first screen, click on alumnos (students).

Online Spanish Game – Un poquito de orden

The boy, Ulises, will give instructions on every screen. Just click on him. The text appears on the screen with the audio. On this first screen, he introduces himself and says to click on the objects to get to different games.

All of the the instructions include brief explanations of the activities. Because these online Spanish games are mostly self-explanatory and kids know what to expect, the instructions are good listening practice.

The three temas are:
Dibujos confusos (Mixed-up pictures) – Click on the figure of a man with a tail for an arm.
Cada cosa en su sitio (Everything in its place) – Click on the shapes.
Cada oveja con su pareja (A saying roughly equivalent to Like seeks like or Every Jack has his Jill) – Click on the sheep.

The first two topics, Dibujos confusos and Cada cosa en su sitio have audio as a part of the games. Cada oveja con su pareja has audio for the instructions, but not in the activities. All of the games are good for practicing common Spanish vocabulary.

These are the activities in each topic. You can advance through them by clicking on the yellow arrow (the audio says siguiente) next to the bar at the top of each screen. You can also click on Rubics cube at the bottom of the screen to get to the activities for each tema.

Dibujos confusos – For all these activities, click on Ulises first and listen as he explains what to do.

1. Choose what does not belong – fruits and vegtables. Move the cursor over the objects for audio. Vocabulary: plátano, pera manzana, cereza, cebolla, uvas

2. Choose the item that does not have something in common with the others. The answer that they are looking for is the snake because it does not fly. (The airplane is also a logical answer because it is not alive). This activity does not have audio when you move the cursor over the picture, but there is a brief explanation, audio and text, when you complete the activity.

3. Find the things that do not make sense in the picture. The cursor turns to a hand when you are over one of the answers. When you click, there is audio and a written explanation.

4. Choose what does not belong – clothes. Move the cursor over the objects for audio. Vocabulary: falda, camisa, gorro, guante, llave, pantalón

5. Choose what does not belong – electronics. Move the cursor over the objects for audio. Vocabulary: ordenador, televisión, ventana, radio

Cada cosa en su lugar - All of these activities are about Christmas. They use Christmas ornaments, decorations, cookies and presents. Each set of instructions includes a brief explanation of what Ulises does at Christmas. It is good listening practice!

1. Click on the matching object. You hear the word when you click on the large object and again when you click on the small one that matches. There are five items to match on separate screens. Vocabulary: campana, regalo, caletín, bola de Navidad, muñeco de nieve

2. Click on the Christmas ornament that is different. You will hear each word pronounced if you click on it.

3. Drag the cookies into the box with the matching shape. Ulises says all the shapes in the instructions. There is no audio in the activity, but you can say the shapes as you play. Vocabulary: galletas, redondas, rectangulares, cuadradas, triangulares, romboidales, con forma de estrella.

4. Click to color the ornaments. There is no audio in the activity, but you can say the colors when the ornaments change. Vocabulary: morado, rojo, amarillo, azul, campana, estrella, muñeco de nieve, bola de Navidad.

5. Match shapes – Say the shapes as you match them. Vocabulary: triángulo, diamante, círculo, cuadrado, estrella.

6. Order from smallest to largest by matching the presents to numbers.

Cada oveja con su pareja - This set of games only has audio for the instructions. They all use common objects, so it is good Spanish vocabulary practice if you say the words as you play.

1. Match the vehicles. Vocabulary: ambulancia, autobús, avión, barco, bicicleta.

2. Match the musical instruments to their names.

3. Memory game, find the matching pairs. Vocabulary: pelota, patín, muñeca, osito

4. Match related items. Vocabulary: zapato – calcetín, pajaro – jaula, cereal – cuchara, flores – florero, vaso – agua, tenedor – cuchillo

5. Match the person in each profession to the object. Vocabulary: doctora, pintora, albañil, mecánico, bombero, policia, llave inglesa, brocha, manguera, carretilla, silbato, estetoscopio
