All of these activities teach Spanish food vocabulary if you talk about them with kids learning Spanish.

You can find all of these activities and others here: Printable Spanish cards for Valentine’s Day.
On the next screen there will be a box on the right side of the screen that says Descargue esta hoja (Download this worksheet).
Click on Archivo en español (File in Spanish) for the Spanish printable. If there is an answer key, it will be labeled Clave de Respuestas en Español.

The following activities have simple text and are appropriate for using with Spanish language learners.

Tarjeta Para Dibujar y Colorear - This is a simple card to color. It says ¡Feliz Día de San Valentín!

San Valentín y Los Grupos Alimenticios – Página de Colorear – This is a coloring page about the food groups and heart health. It uses the vocabulary for the food groups: granos, vegetales, frutas, lacteos, carnes y frijoles. There is also a sentence about exercise that uses the common verbs saltar, caminar and correr.

Tarjeta Para Mantenerse Activo Para el Día de San Valentín - This is a colorful card about being active. It is designed to print, cut out and glue to heavier paper. The Spanish says Vamos a mantener nuestros corazones felices con actividad divertida (Let’s keep our hearts happy with fun activity). Sé mi compañero activo para San Valentín. (Be my active Valentine buddy).

Diversión Para el Corazón Saludable – Tarjetas Para el Día de San Valentín – There are four colorful mini-cards on this page. The Spanish text reminds kids to be active with phrases like Mantén a tu corazón bombeando fuerte con ejercicio. (Keep your heart beating strong with exercise.)

Actividad de Emparejar – Alimentos para un a corazón saludable – This is a matching activity. Children match the activities with the energetic heart or the tired heart. The activities include basic vocabulary like no desayunar, correr, mirar televisión, bailar, caminar, deportes, sentarse todo el día, jugar en la computadora, and trabajar en el jardín.

Opciones Saludables Para Niñas – Tarjetas Para el Día de San Valentín – These cards have pictures of girls. The Spanish says Mantente activo cada día y tu corazón estará contento (Be active every day and your heart will be happy) and Manten tu corazón saludable con el ejercicio (Keep your heart healthy with exercise).

Opciones Saludables Para Niños – Tarjetas Para el Día de San Valentín - These cards have pictures of boys. The text is the same as the cards with pictures of girls: Mantente activo cada día y tu corazón estará contento (Be active every day and your heart will be happy) and Manten tu corazón saludable con el ejercicio (Keep your heart healthy with exercise).

Comidas Saludables – Tarjetas Para el Día de San Valentín – These cards have messages about healthy food:
¡Las frutas son una merienda sabrosa todos los días! (Fruit is a healthy snack everyday.)
¡A tu corazón le encantan los vegetales y las frutas! (Your heart loves vegetables and fruit.)
¡A tus huesos le encanta la leche! (Your bones love milk.)

Alfabetos de Palabras Saludables Para San Valentín
On the worksheet, kids put Valentine’s Day words in alphabetical order: Valentín, corazón, ejercicio, amor, saludable, sonrisa, feliz, cartas, activo, Cúpido, frutas.

Comidas Saludables para Colorear – Tarjetas Para el Día de San Valentín - These are black and white cards to color. The Spanish text includes phrases like: ¡A tu corazón le encantan los vegetales! (Your heart loves vegetables) and Hay alimentos saludables que vienen de los árboles. (There are healthy foods that come from trees.)

Rompecabezas Imprimible de Búsqueda de Palabras Para San Valentín - This is a word search puzzle. The words are: manzanas, nueces, fibra, corazón, semilla, activa, fruta.
The word nueces is misspelled in puzzle. It is spelled with a z and should be with a c. The singular nuez (nut) is with a z.
The word corazón is misspelled in the list of words beside the puzzle, but it is correct in the puzzle.

Nourish Interactive has other Valentine’s Day materials in Spanish on the same page. The site also has wonderful activities and materials to use all year.
These printable Spanish cards for Valentine’s day are a fun activity for children learning the language. Valentine’s day in Spanish is Día del amor y la amistad (The day of love and friendship), Día de San Valentín or Día de los enamorados. Most Spanish-speaking countries celebrate on Feb. 14th, although in Colombia they celebrate on the third Saturday of September. Many countries also celebrate El día del amigo in June or July.

To celebrate Día del amor y la amistad, children can print Spanish-language cards to share with their friends or make their own.

Here are a few cards in Spanish that you can personalize and print. These links show the sample text. Children can use these messages or put in their own phrases.

(This link opens a new window, and a pop-up may open too. Just close the pop-up. The page is behind and works well.)

If you celebrate Christmas, Christmas cards are a fun way for kids learning Spanish to use the language. In Spanish, Christmas cards are tarjetas de Navidad, tarjetas navideñas or postales de Navidad, depending on the country. Cards are a good language activity because they are short and there is often an illustration to support the text. Also, context helps kids understand the Spanish; they know that the cards are sending Christmas wishes. In addition, the phrases used on these cards convey the cultural importance of Christmas and expressing heartfelt emotions.

There are websites that have free cards to personalize and print. Correomágico has Spanish printable cards with a variety of messages. There is a pop-up advertisement that opens when you click on the individual cards, but after you close that, there is a simple form to personalize the card. Then just click imprimir (print).

Use this link for more printable Spanish cards. Just scroll down to the cards and click on the image.

If you are making your own cards and need a little inspiration for messages, Pekegifs has a list of Spanish phrases for Christmas.

You also might want to try this cute printable Spanish pop-up card. When you open it, Santa comes out of the chimney. The message is simple Te deseo…¡Feliz Navidad! The instructions are in Spanish, but there are pictures too. There is a PDF to print the pattern. Just click on the image of the pattern at the end of the post.

In Spanish, this game is a comecocos or a sacapiojos. In English, it is called a cootie-catcher, a chatterbox or a fortune teller. This is an excellent language activity and it can be adapted in lots of different ways to use with Spanish language learners. It involves folding paper to make a toy that fits over your fingers and opens and closes. A friend chooses a series of pictures or words to arrive at the answer to a question. Comecocos is also the Spanish name for the 80s video game Pac-man, so if you want to search for this paper game, search comecocos de papel.

If you are not familiar with this game, you can get an idea of how it works from this video: Spanish game

Traditionally, a comecocos is a kind of fortune-teller, with the final answer being a prediction. For Spanish language learners, you can make the comecocos so kids arrive at a question to answer, an action to do, an adjective that describes them, their favorite food, or other vocabulary that you want to practice.

When I use a comecocos with Spanish language learners, instead of having kids spell words, I have them say the words in syllables and usually as part of a phrase. For example, if the first choice is of a color, and the friend chooses rojo, the child with the comecocos opens and closes it twice, as she says aloud ro-jo, or for each syllable as she says the phrase El color es rojo. Kids like the phrases because they get to open and close the comecocos more. You can use phrases like El número es… and El animal es…, depending on the comecocos.

With any comecocos, you will want to be sure the player with the toy knows how to ask the other player which color, number or animal she chooses. Teach the question ¿Cuál quieres? or ¿Cuál escojes? if the kids do not know it. They can also say Escoje uno (Choose one.).

Printable Spanish game – Comecocos

Here are a few of my comecocos to print and use with Spanish language learners. You can easily make your own by writing in words, adding drawings and using stickers. I have included a blank comecocos. There are instructions for folding these below the PDFs, but you can also just fold them without a pattern. Links to useful sites with more instructions and ideas follow my materials.

Spanish game – Los animales: A comecocos with numbers and animals. The final choice reveals a question about what sound an animal makes: ¿Cómo hace un perro? This is a simple way for kids to practice animal vocabulary.

Spanish game – Preguntas: A comecocos with colors and numbers. The final choice reveals a personal information question to answer, such as ¿Cuántos hermanos tienes?

Spanish game – ¿Cómo eres?: A comecocos with colors and numbers. The final choice reveals an adjective that describes the player such as paciente, fuerte, amable.

Spanish game – La Navidad: A comecocos with Christmas vocabulary and numbers. The final choice reveals a picture of what the player will get for Christmas.

A blank comecocos. Write or draw whatever you like. Stickers work well too.

Printable instructions for the Spanish game, comecocos.

Instructions for folding the Spanish game – Comecocos

1. Cut out the comecocos.

2. With the printed side up, fold in half to get a rectangle. Fold that rectangle in half to get a square.

3. Open the comecocos completely, place the printed side down on the table, and fold each corner into the center (the point of the corner will touch the middle). You will have a square.

4. Flip over the comecocos (the corners you just folded in will be against the table). Again fold in each corner so the point touches the center.

5. Flip over again and fold in half to crease, unfold and then fold in half the other way to crease. Unfold. You should end up with a square with little pockets at each corner.

6. Fold in half with the pockets on the outside. Hold the comecocos so the openings of the pockets are down. Put the thumb and index finger from one hand into the pockets on one side. Put the other thumb and index finger into the other two pockets. Pinch your index fingers and thumbs together.

A find-it jar (or scavenger hunt in a bottle) is a great toy for kids who are learning Spanish. I have played with these in stores and love them. Searching for the tiny boat, discovering the dinosaur – it is captivating! Find-it jars can be a good language learning activity, so I was happy to discover that making your own is not complicated at all.

A find-it jar is a plastic or glass jar filled with colored rice, sand, beads or glitter with tiny objects in it. You can put any variety of small things you find around the house into the jar. Children turn the jar looking for the objects. Take a picture of the objects before you assemble the jar, so kids know what they are looking for. It is a good idea to glue the lid closed with super glue or a hot glue gun. There are detailed instructions for making a find-it jar here and another good explanation for making a find-it jar here. This site calls them Lookie Loos – a scavenger hunt in your hand and also has instructions.

With a find-it jar children can learn new Spanish vocabulary or practice words they know. They can also practice noun-adjective agreement, the verbs buscar (to look for), ver (to see) and encontrar (to find), and direct object pronouns. These are a few suggestions for how to make and use a find-it jar specifically to practice Spanish with children:

• One option is to make the selection of objects completely random, based on what you find around the house. These are a few of the things that we found and the Spanish vocabulary:

el dado – die
el caballo – horse
el león – lion
el perro – dog
el zapato – shoe
los lentes de sol – sunglasses
la concha – shell
la moneda – coin
el clip – paperclip
el tornillo – screw
la cuenta – bead
la canica – marble
el candado – tiny pad lock
la piedrita – little stone
el imperdible – safety pin
la casa – house (from Monopoly)
las uvas – grapes
el plátano – banana
la manzana – apple
la taza – cup
la llanta – a tire
el botón – a button
la carita feliz – a smiley face (a button)
el toro – a bull
el conejo – a rabbit
el anillo – a ring
el oso – a bear
el delfín – a dolphin

• When you take the picture of the objects, you can label them if you like. This will depend on whether or not your child reads in Spanish and how familiar she is with the words.

• You can focus on a theme like animals or colors.

• You can choose objects that start with different letters and put in the letters, too. Kids can look for the letter and the object that begins with that letter. There are lots of craft beads with letters and also tiny alphabet blocks for crafts ($.99 for the set at our craft store).

• This is a great activity to practice describing. Kids will probably say things like Veo el zapato azul (I see the blue shoe) anyway, but you can focus on adjective placement and agreement by listing or labeling some of the objects with an adjective. It does not matter if the adjectives are obvious; it is still good practice. Describe objects by using phrases like:

un botón redondo / un botón cuadrado – a round button / a square button
una canica vieja – an old marble
un toro negro – a black bull
un león feroz – a fierce lion
un perro bonito – a pretty dog
una casa pequeña – a small house

• Regardless of the objects that you put in the jar, children can practice these verbs. Just use veo and no veo if your child is a beginner.

Busco – I’m looking for
Veo – I see
No veo – I don’t see
No encuentro – I’m not finding
No puedo encontrar – I can’t find
Es el (la)… – It is the..
Allí está el (la)… – There is the..
Creo que es el (la)… – I think it is the …
Vi el (la)… – I saw the…
Encontré el (la)… – I found the…
Ya vi el (la)… – I already saw the …
Ya encontré el (la)… – I already found the…

• The verbs above are easily combined with object pronouns when kids are playing with a find-it jar:

El perro. Busco el perro. ¡Lo veo! – The dog. I’m looking for the dog. I see it!
La casa. Ya la vi. – The house. I already saw it.

I love using story sticks with kids learning Spanish. The pictures reinforce what they hear, and the movement helps them process the language. Children use the stick to order pictures of a story as they listen. These printable templates are free, the sticks are simple to make, and they are based on great books. Also, kids really like using them.

On the site Making Learning Fun, you will find printable templates to make story sticks for the Spanish versions of three books: Oso pardo, oso pardo ¿Qué ves ahí? (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?), La araña muy ocupada (The Very Busy Spider), and La oruga muy hambrienta (The Very Hungry Caterpillar). You can also use the Brown Bear story stick with a great song by 1-2-3 Spanish Together called ¿Qué ves ahí? from their Jump into Spanish CD.

For two of the stories, you use paint stirrers and Velcro to make the story sticks. They are very simple, and there are directions on Making Learning Fun. You put Velcro on the paint stick, and Velcro on the back of the picture squares. As children listen to the story in Spanish, they attach the pictures in order. The directions call for laminating the pictures. That would make them more durable, but I have had good luck with printing them on card stock. For La oruga muy hambrienta (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), the picture squares have a hole in them and the children thread them on a pipe cleaner as they hear the story.

Click here for a story stick to use with the Spanish version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?.

Click here for a story stick to use with the Spanish version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

These story sticks make it easy to provide lots of support as a child is learning new Spanish vocabulary and then moves gradually to using more language. The first step is to just read the story to your child, letting her listen, but not using the story stick. Next, be sure that she can see the illustrations as you read to help her order the pictures on the story stick. As she gets more confident, you can tell parts of the story without showing the illustrations. Remember, the first few pictures are the hardest because she has more pictures to choose from, so it is important to give support with the illustrations from the book. Soon she will be able to order the story as she listens without seeing the illustrations at all.

A completed story stick is a great Spanish speaking prompt. All these stories have a pattern. Between the pattern and the support of the pictures, children can learn to tell the story in Spanish.

You can print the templates for these story sticks in black and white or in color. Coloring the pictures is a good Spanish language learning activity for children – just talk about the pictures as they color. You can also print the color version, attach the Velcro and the kids can get right to using the story sticks as you read to them.

This short video from Discovery Kids lends itself to lots of Spanish learning activities. As Doki paints a picture, he talks to his friend Pincel (paintbrush). The small range of vocabulary, repetition, and great visuals make this video perfect for Spanish language learners. The video is very short, just one minute long, but there is lots of Spanish that kids will understand.

It is important that children have the chance to watch the video more than once. The natural pace of the Spanish may seem fast at first, but children quickly adjust and understand. No matter what follow-up activities you do, be sure to watch the video all the way though once without pausing it, so that your child can use the whole context to understand what is happening.

A vocabulary list, the transcript and a translation follow these activities. Click the link to see the video about colors in Spanish.

Activities - After your child watches the video all the way through, you can do follow-up activities like these.

1. Watch a second time, pausing the video to comment. Repeat important words and point to the objects as you talk about them. For example:

Me gusta el árbol. Yo puedo dibujar un árbol también. / I like the tree. I can draw a tree too.

Los colores son bonitos. Doki tiene uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco colores. / The colors are pretty. Doki has one, two, three, four, five colors.

Doki está triste. No tiene pintura verde. / Doki is sad. He doesn’t have green paint.

Doki está feliz ahora. Tiene pintura verde. El árbol es bonito. / Doki is happy now. He has green paint.

Veo la pintura naranja y la pintura negra. / I see the orange paint and the black paint.

Allí está la pintura azul y allí está la pintura blanca. / There is the blue paint and there is the white paint.

El cielo es azul. El dibujo de Doki es bonito. / The sky is blue. Doki’s drawing is pretty.

2. Color some orange, yellow, blue, white, black, green, and brown on a sheet of paper. Watch a second time, touching each of the colors when you hear them in Spanish.

3. As you watch the video a second time, pause and ask simple questions in Spanish. You can ask questions like these:

¿Qué va a pintar Doki? / What is Doki going to paint?
¿Cuáles son los colores que tiene Doki? / What colors does Doki have?
¿Qué color no tiene? / What color doesn’t Doki have?
¿Cuáles son los colores que mezcla Doki para crear el color verde? / What colors does Doki mix to make green?
¿Cuáles son los colores que mezcla Doki para crear el color marrón? / What colors does Doki mix to make brown?
¿De qué color es el cielo? / What color is the sky?

4. The video is simple enough that you and your child can do and say what Doki does by pausing the video or by painting after you watch. Assemble the paints and make the simple drawing of the tree. Repeat the lines from the video as you mix the colors and paint. You can also repeat the important Spanish words and key phrases instead of the whole dialog.

5. If your child is beginning to read in Spanish, use simple sentences and order the events of the video. Present the events in sets of two or three. Ask: ¿Qué pasa primero? ¿Y entonces? Use sentences like these:

1.
___ Doki pinta el árbol verde.
___ Doki no tiene pintura verde
___ Doki mezcla pintura azul con pintura amarilla.

2.
___ Pincel le dice a Doki como hacer el color marrón.
___ Doki mezcla pintura naranja con pintura negra.

3.
___ Doki mezcla pintura blanca con la pintura azul.
___ Doki dice que el azul es muy oscuro para el cielo.
___ Doki pinta el cielo.

6. Older children can learn and act out the dialog.

7. To practice different Spanish vocabulary, you can use the same dialog to talk about mixing other colors to paint different pictures. For example, the picture can be of a pumpkin and the colors that you have can be red and orange.

Mi mundo en palabras is part of the Centro Virtual Cervantes, a site created by the Instituto Cervantes of Spain. It is a wonderful interactive site designed to teach children Spanish. The target audience is seven to nine-year-olds, that is, children who can read and write. However, many of the activities can be used by younger children with the help of an adult.

There are 10 units and each includes a short cartoon video and several activities. The video within each unit is called El mundo de Carlos and each is divided into several short sections. The video presents the structures and vocabulary in context and models pronunciation. To make the most of the site it is best to watch the video before doing the activities. Each unit also has Pasatiempo, a game using the vocabulary and structures, and Taller, a craft activity.

Mochila de palabras is the picture dictionary of the vocabulary in each unit. You can access the dictionary from the unit menu, but also by clicking on the backpack icon on the bottom toolbar. From the toolbar, the glossary is available as you are doing the activities. When you click on the pictures in the dictionary, you hear the pronunciation and see the written word below.

The presentation and the activities are well-conceived and entertaining. This site is an excellent introduction to the language, but also useful for more advanced students as extra listening practice and a review of vocabulary. There is a lot of language presented in these short lessons, so with beginners you may want to do just a little at a time. Also, remember to go back and play again. Repetition is essential!

These are the units that make up Mi mundo en palabras and some of the key concepts they teach. On the menu screen, the flying rocket indicates the order of the units.

1. ¡Hola! Soy Carlos / Hi, I’m Carlos (greetings, age, me gusta + verb to express what you like to do)
2. Esta es mi familia / This is my family (family members, physical descriptions of people, professions)
3. Vamos a jugar a mi casa / Let’s play at my house (toys, furniture, prepositions/position words, vocabulary and phrases for playing a board game)
4. En el cole / At school (days of the week, school subjects, parts of a school, describing personalities)
5. La clase de gimnasia / Gym class (body parts, left and right, sports equipment and clothes, me gusta + verb to talk about sports you like)
6. Mis dibujos / My drawings (nature words, art and school supplies, people and feelings)
7. En el parque / In the park (playground games, outside toys, prepositions, park vocabulary)
8. Un fin de semana especial / A special weekend (places in the community to go for fun like the zoo or the theater, wild animals, adjectives to describe animals, fairytale vocabulary).
9. Excursión a la granja / Trip to the farm (daily routine, farm animals, food)
10. Fiesta de disfraces / Costume party (party vocabulary; characters such as witch, vampire, clown, or pirate; numbers 1-31, months of the year)

Children love Día del amor y la amistad because it is chance to recognize how important their friends are to them. It is a day for celebrating romantic relationships too, but the appreciation of friendship is a big part of the celebration.

To celebrate Día del amor y la amistad, children can print Spanish-language cards to share with their friends or make their own.

Here are a few cards in Spanish that you can personalize and print. These links show the sample text. Children can use these messages or put in their own phrases.

Te regalo esta tarjeta con cariño, porque es maravilloso tenerte en mi vida. / I’m giving you this card with affection, because it is wonderful to have you in my life.

Miles de besos y abrazos para ti en este día de San Valentín. Feliz día de San Valentín / Thousands of kisses and hugs for you on this Valentine’s Day. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Under the card click Personalizar e imprimir gratis (Personalize and print free).
Read and fill in the options together. Your child will understand the labels from the example, but these are the words that are used:

Destinatario (Recipient)
Escribe tu mensaje (Write your message)
Firma (Signature)
Fecha (Date)

These Valentine’s bookmarks in Spanish are fun to share with friends and family. There are three per page and they can also be personalized. This is the sample text:
